Oh, for the healthy days

Before we moved to Flagstaff, we used to be a relatively healthy family. Yes, we had the occasional cold and stomach bug but mostly it was par for the course. Since moving to Flagstaff, Megan, Ben (who never gets sick), and I have had the flu; Megan has had 2 ear infections; and Samantha has had the stomach flu…twice. I’m not sure if it is the weather, with its wild swings from cold and snowy one day to 55 degrees and sunny the next. In any case, I pray everyday that we can make it through the day without another family member succumbing to yet another bug. Well, as luck would have it, Samantha woke up on Saturday morning complaining of a headache. By Sunday afternoon she had severe allergies – and we’re talking about a child who has never been affected by allergies before. She sat on the sofa wiping at her swollen, watery eyes for so long that she completely bruised the area around her right eye so that now it looks like she was in a fight. Poor dear. Someone tell me that one day I’ll look back at this and laugh instead of crying.

Megan followed me around all weekend – with Samantha sick she didn’t have her playmate/sparring partner for sibling disagreements. At one point she was bored out of her mind and somehow managed to sneak my seldom-used pastry brush and a glass full of water out of the kitchen. When I discovered her, she was outside “painting” the deck. I just left her alone since she was entertaining herself. This strange past-time has become a daily activity and she tells me that she has an imaginary friend named Juliana to whom she talks while she is painting.

Ben’s birthday is at the end of the week. For the short time last weekend that Sammie was feeling OK, the girls went to Kids Night Out at the gym and Ben and I had a leisurely dinner at Outback. What a treat! So liberating to take the time to get connected and focus on each other instead of our daily responsibilities. Hopefully we can do this again before too long.
